A common mistake by web masters is that they fail to see potential. Something which is vital for something as viral as a website. The potential for a website can be massive, yet unbeknown to the web master, whom may underestimate this factor, and either seize developing the website, or sell it, because it isn’t showing quick progress.
I myself, am very impatient when it comes to web developing. I just can’t hold onto a site for a long time - the only sites which I can do this with are blogs, but even then, I would still sell if someone offered me a decent enough amount.
This topic is very much related to web masters undervaluing their site, and not seeing exactly how much it could be worth instead of using the silly 10x mechanism talked about in Google Page Rank Obsession post. There are a lot of web masters out there who do this, especially in the Digital Point community. It is seen as an ample way of valuating a site, something which I utterly disagree with. If this business wasn’t full of rogue people just out there to make a quick buck, then things would be better in the sense of a site’s valuation.
In some ways, this undervaluation of sites is a positive thing. Those who know the true value of a website, and have the capital to back it up can make nice profits buying and selling websites.
Overall, it’s vital that web masters begin to see the true potential of their websites, and not ignore the fact that their site has a massive potential to grow.
